Brown coal has been mined in Germany since the 16th century although serious scientific research did not begin until the 18th and 19th centuries with the work of chemist Franz Carl Achard (1753 – 1821). Brown coal is rich in humic acids, of which the highest grade is known as Leonardite and it is this that provides the base and active ingredients for most of the Humintech products.   At their factory close to the mine in Grevenbroich, just outside Dusseldorf, only the finest grade is used in the manufacturing process.

Through the assimilation of organic matter, the soil humus complex is formed, but intensive 20th century farming practices have led to a depletion in soil organic matter, particularly where livestock is not part of the farming system.  As a result, many soils in the British Isles are low in soil organic matter, are structurally unstable and prone to erosion, as well as low in beneficial micro-organisms. Soil fertility is compromised and land is not reaching its full potential in terms of crop yield and quality.

There are long-term benefits from using humic acid products.  While they are not in themselves fertilisers, they act as soil conditioners, bio-catalysts and bio-stimulants, enhancing soil fertility and plant growth. Soil humus takes many years to form, but using these powerful humic acid products can shorten this process.
